Winter camping with shot of boots on snow

Is Winter Glamping with Canvas Tents Worth It?

At first glance, this question might be a no-brainer. But that’s because winter 2021/2022 is a La Niña patterned winter with sustained, far-below frigid temperatures in the Calgary and Airdrie area.

Canvas tents offer heavy-duty insulation against the weather, and they can work well with wood stoves to keep you warm in your sub-zero campsite. When you’re sleeping in a tent like this, winter glamping becomes a pleasure for much of southern Canada’s winter. In this post, we’ll look at how you can make winter glamping not only bearable but also worth all the potential discomfort.

Canvas Tents with Stove

If you’re looking to actually enjoy a winter camping or glamping trip, you should plan your canvas tent around compatibility with an internal wood stove. You’ll have a cheap, abundant fuel source of food. But then you’ll need to choose a type of tent that can accommodate one.

Canvas tents can come in a few shapes and sizes. But it depends on what you’re using it for. Hunting tents come in custom shapes, even in the form of hunter tipis, to make shelter for summer or fall sportsmen.

Canvas wall tents are ideally suited to wood stoves, not only airtight heaters for warmth, but also for cooking exhaust. Conversely, a Whelan lean-to wouldn’t perform well for winter glamping. This canvas tent design provides little to no insulation, and it’s best used in temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius.

Canvas Tent Repair

Winter glamping might not be too enjoyable if you have a hole in your canvas tent. With professional canvas tent repair, however, the insulation can conserve enough heat to make the interior habitable in sub-zero temperatures.

But if you’re looking at days and days on end, of severe cold weather warnings typical for 2021/2022, you may want to think about delaying your winter glamping trip for another time. Even with the excellent insulation of a fully repaired canvas tent, keeping interior wood stoves’ heat output conserved, it’s bound to be a little too chilly this year. Maybe next year, though!
